Five Favourite Festive Candles

One of the best things about Christmas time for me, is having lush candles with evocative scents dotted around the house to really set the festive mood...

1. Diptyque - Le Roi Sapin Limited Edition Candle

Diptyque is the gold standard by which I measure every candle. Their candles are of exquisite quality, throw their scent beautifully, and accentuate any room with their elegant aesthetic. I've never met a Diptyque candle I didn't like, and this year is no exception. Every Christmas, they bring out a limited edition Christmas candle collection with the most exquisite and luxurious designs that usually sell out everywhere. I am a particular fan of this year's Le Roi Sapin as it evokes that magical scent of the traditional Christmas fir tree with lush green notes of resin, cedar and patchouli.

My other Christmas classic choices by Diptyque are Figuier, Pomander, Oranger (which I am currently burning) Feu de Bois, and of course the ever popular Baies.

I know Space NK Dublin is sold out of Le Roi Sapin but think they may have a few left in Brown Thomas so hurry!

2. Space NK  - Shimmering Spice Candle

Space NK Shimmering Spice Candle  -  the annual special edition by Space NK - has been one of my favourite festive candles for years. When I worked with Space NK, it was one of the staff top picks for its superb quality and excellent price point within the luxury candle category and was always a top recommendation for the most perfect hostess gift. I mean who wouldn't love to receive it? It's a wonderful blend of cinnamon, citrus, cedar and vanilla and it throws the combined scent beautifully. Each year it has a different design, usually to complement the overall store festive theme. I think this year's gold minimalist design is my favourite one of all, and works well with the current trend for Scandi-inspired festive decor.

The good news is they have it in stock just now in Grafton Street so I would get my sleigh bells on to secure it if I were you!

3. The White Company  - Winter Candle

I no longer dream of a perfect White Christmas, I dream of a perfect The White Company Christmas. The White Company, my favourite store, just gets it right every year with its pared back, subtle yet extremely elegant, Christmas offering. It's the stuff dream Christmases are made of where you can imagine yourself tip-toeing around your perfectly decorated home in your perfect cashmere socks admiring your most perfect tree and dining at the most perfectly set Christmas table. Each July, I wait with anticipation on Instagram for a glimpse of their forthcoming festive collection shown at their Christmas press day and eagerly await them going online (I miss visiting their beautiful store in Edinburgh so please The White Company open a store in Ireland!).

Their 'Winter' candle is a warm and inviting combination of cinnamon, clove and fresh orange. Every Christmas, they expand the range to a stunning collection of votives, special edition sizes, botanical candles, diffusers, and tree pomanders.

Winter Signature Candle

The last few years I've had the Winter signature candle burning in the living room (though I would SO love their four wick Winter Indulgence Candle with its stunning silver top - Christmas miracles do happen this time of year right?) and I also have their Winter Room Spray, which gives that wonderful festive ambience when spritzed in the hallway and living room.

Brown Thomas have a seasonal selection of items from The White Company in store and online so check there if you live in Ireland, or in store at one of their many stores in the UK.

4. Clean Slate  - Cardamom and Spice Candle

Clean Slate Cardamom and Spice Candle

The Kitchen is the heart of Christmas and it's here where the most wonderful culinary smells evoke memories of childhood Christmases past, spent 'helping' the Christmas cakes and puddings being made while eagerly waiting to be offered the chance to spoon around the bowl for the remaining morsels of mix to eat. The Cardamom and Spice candle by Clean Slate captures the very essence of that nostalgic memory.

With a base of spicy cardamom and top notes of ginger and nutmeg, it surrounds the room with a wonderful homely scent of cosy afternoons spent in warm kitchens baking for the festivities. Their apothecary style simplistic packaging in amber jars is pitch perfect for the design conscious who want not only a fantastic scent, but a stylish vessel to display that sits equally well in both today's minimalistic clean and maximalistic eclectic decors.

If you prefer a greener, fresher festive fragrance scent try their Winter Fig candle, which though I have not yet burned it, I did smell recently when in Apassionata Flowers on Drury Street in Dublin. It smells fabulous!

Of course, I regret not picking it up now, but at the time I was on a quest to find their Irish Cream candle, which they didn't have in stock there as I have heard it is fabulous too - can you imagine a candle that evokes the essence of a Baileys by the fire. Divine.

5. Cloon Keen Atelier  - Antique Library Candle

My first time to come across this most luxe of Irish brands was a couple of years ago in Vogue magazine no less, when they featured their Lune de Givre Eau de Parfum fragrance. So on my next trip to Galway, I had to discover more about this relatively new Irish brand at their flagship store. They've the most beautiful atelier in the heart of Galway city where I met the talented lady behind the brand, Canadian born Maggie Mangan. Again, this is a brand that understands the importance of a beautiful aesthetic when it comes to its packaging. All of their fragrances and candles come in the most beautiful boxes and each candle is hand poured into a decadent silver glass holder.

This year, their limited edition Christmas candle is Noble Fir, and though I have only smelled it in store in Brown Thomas,  it seems quite nice - another lush Christmas fir tree inspired scent.  I quite liked their previous seasonal edition Christmas Pomander, so if that is anything to go by, you are in for a treat.

But it is their Antique Library candle that gives that most hygge of hygge vibes. Inspired by the Long Room of Trinity College Dublin, with a base of cedar and beeswax accentuated with top notes of nutmeg, leather and incense, it was given to First Lady Michelle Obama as a gift by the Irish Government on the last state visit of US President Obama. It reminds me a little of Diptyque's Feu de Bois though it is more subtle, and I feel like I should be curled up on an old Chesterfield with a vintage port and a classic novel in hand every time I smell it. Well if it's good enough for the Obamas...

You can find the full range online at Cloon Keen Atelier in their beautiful Store in Galway and a smaller selection online at Brown Thomas with a wider range in store at their Grafton Street store.
