My favourite Cult Cleansers

Cult Cleansers -

Nature gives you the face you have at 20,
but it’s up to you to merit the face you have at 50”
- Coco Chanel

Your skin is an amazing organ and worth looking after to keep it healthy and radiant. I really believe in investing in your skincare regime and using the best products you can afford – it is after all a lifelong investment.
There are so many amazing products out there for all budgets, but sometimes we opt instead to spend on clothes or accessories to boost our image. Remember fashion fades, but skin lasts a lifetime!

Good skincare starts with the basics - a good cleansing regime. Below are some of my favourite cult cleansers that require a little upfront investment, but used properly last a long time and will give you more long term value than any top bought on the high street for the same price. I thoroughly recommend double cleansing at night - once to remove the initial layer of make-up and the typical grime of the day our skin is exposed to, and the second cleanse to really clean the skin. Try it, notice the difference, and you will soon be convinced. I also use a muslin cloth when cleansing regardless of the particular product I am using. They gently exfoliate and help you to visually see when your skin is clean. I prefer EVE LOM's muslin cloths as they are very effective and last a long time.

EVE LOM Cleanser

EVE LOM is the original cult cleanser. I can still remember the excitement I felt when I bought my first ever EVE LOM cleanser from Space NK long before I ever worked there. I had not long moved to Edinburgh and one evening out in town, I walked past the Space NK store on George Street. The beautiful window display was completely dedicated to EVE LOM. I had read so much about it but hadn’t known where to buy it so I simply couldn’t wait till the following day to pop in and try it. And as soon as I did, I loved it. Having had acne since my very early teens in varying degrees from very severe (requiring multiple courses of Roaccutane treatment) in my early twenties to thankfully very mild now, it was a Godsend for my skin and from then on I became a complete devotee. It’s a real one-stop solution cleanser - it removes make-up, cleanses, exfoliates, tones and conditions the skin. It’s a blend of four aromatic plant oils - clove oil to clarify the skin; eucalyptus oil to decongest; hops oil to tone; Egyptian chamomile oil to calm and soothe; and cocoa butter to soften and condition.

Eve Lom Cleanser -

The trick with EVE LOM is not to use too much. Many people use far more of the product than required - you just need an amount the size of a Euro coin or 20 pence piece. Warm it up between the palms of your hands, then apply in circular motions to dry skin and massage for about a minute. Make-up just melts away and it is fantastic to remove eye make-up and mascara - in particular waterproof mascara - without irritating the eyes. Soak the muslin cloth in hot water (as hot as you can bear) wring it out and hold the cloth to your face for about seven seconds to allow the steam to open your pores and let the cleanser sink in. Then use the cloth to remove the product, rinse it in hot water and apply again before finally rinsing the cloth in cold water and pressing on the face to close the pores. If you are wearing make-up, I recommend you repeat this entire process to thoroughly cleanse the skin. The gentle exfoliating effect of the muslin cloth perfectly preps the skin for the application of serum and moisturiser. My face always feels smoother, and softer with an added glow after using it. No wonder Vogue magazine described it as ‘probably the best cleanser in the world’.

Emma Hardie Moringa Balm Cleanser

Emma Hardie Moringa Cleansing Balm quite simply is AMAZING. I just drink in its scent every time I use it. I love, love, love it. I started to use it around the time of my wedding a few years ago and every time I use it, its scent reminds me of that time – it’s so soothing and calming and it really adds to my unwinding ritual at night time. Lighter and silkier in texture to EVE LOM, it is also a fabulous multi-tasking cleanser – it cleanses, moisturises and calms all skin types.

It contains grape seed oil and sweet almond oil rich in essential fatty acids help to plump and soften the skin; moringa seed extract, wild sea fennel and vitamin E to help balance and purify; and the essential oils of orange, neroli and mandarin to rejuvenate and revitalise the skin, while jasmine and rose help to recondition it. It perfectly removes make up and does not irritate my skin or eyes. It comes with its own dual action cloth, but I prefer to use the EVE LOM muslin cloth with it. Again, I recommend a double cleanse to thoroughly cleanse and remove all traces of make-up. It can also be used as a hydrating mask if applied to clean dry skin and left on for 10 minutes before removal with a muslin cloth.

Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Gel

Oskia’s Renaissance Cleansing Gel is a fabulous product I’ve only recently been using and already it has stormed the skincare charts into my top three. I first discovered the brand when Anna from Vivianna Does Makeup raved about it on her blog (I am currently lusting after their latest serum following a sample I received at Space NK). More of a gel-like consistency, Renaissance Cleansing Gel does exactly what it says on the container - it's an illuminating vitamin melting cleanser that also helps to strengthen and revitalise skin whilst thoroughly removing every trace of the day to day grease and grime our skin absorbs as well as make-up.

Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Gel -

It's made from high-tech natural ingredients including vitamins and essential skin nutrients such as Vitamin A to help improve the appearance of sun damaged, dry or more mature skin by gently resurfacing and promoting elasticity; Vitamin C and E to restore, fortify and protect the skin from free radicals; Starflower Oil - an excellent source of Omega 6, Magnesium and Vitamins B2 and C to improve elasticity and firmness.and enhance the lipid barrier and Oskia’s very own signature ingredient MSM that detoxifies, soothes and reduces inflammation. All that combines to create a truly gorgeous cleanser. I just massage it on to dry skin in circular motions and then add a little water to emulsify it into a milky consistency. I then remove it with a muslin cloth soaked in warm water. I particular like using it in the morning as it makes my skin seem brighter and more refreshed and leaves a silky soft feel.

And In Case of Emergency…

Let’s be honest we all have those times when after a night out, we just want sleep! However, the worst thing to reach for is the pack of facial wipes. They are so drying to the skin as many contain alcohol and never really clean the skin properly.

Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water -

Instead a little advanced emergency prep by your bedside in the shape of a bottle of Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water (a steal at just under 4 Euros) and some cotton pads is a perfect quick and effective solution when you are just too tired, or it's just too late. It's my go to cleanser for eye make-up removal and the late night quick fix your skin will thank you for it in the morning.
